Passion Sunday, the third day of the trip, we attended Crosspoint Hays for church. Carin is the college Sunday School teacher there and she has been taking the students through the books of 1-2 Samuel. That morning, we looked at the story not long after David's sin with Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 14-15. These two chapters show some of the consequences that David had to endure as a result of his sin. His children fought with each other and even tried to overthrow his position as king of Israel. Although I am not going to go into much detail over this passage, it is interesting to see the similarities between David and his son Absalom. It is also neat, as you read the rest of the story, to see how God protected His chosen king, David.
After church we went to a birthday party for one of the Challenge students. His parents had invited all of the Challenge students to come over to their house for some spaghetti and cake. We had a great time continuing to hang out with members of Challenge and establishing relationships with them. That afternoon we had orientation as well, back on campus. Carin and Jesse told us about Challenge, how it got started and why Carin had come to Hays. They then gave a quick summary of what they do and how they are involved on campus. They also shared with us some of the goals they had for the week.
After orientation, we went out on campus to chalk. They wanted us to write "Happy Easter" and other Easter phrases all over their campus. So we made riddles, neat sayings, and pictures to scatter all over campus. For instance, we wrote "He is Risen," "the story that turned the world upside down," "Jesus kicked death's butt," along with verses all over campus. This was intended to cause students to think about the resurrection during the week, but it also served as a constant reminder for me during the week. I was always finding new chalkings that I had not noticed before during the week. It was a great reminder of what Christ has done for us!
That night we ended the day by hanging out at Carin's house. About once a month they have what they call "family dinners" where each student brings something to eat, and they make a meal out of it. So we spent the night once again hanging out with the students of Challenge while getting arrangements made for the next two days that we would spend entirely on campus. We were all planning on attending at least one class over the next two days as well as prayer walk the campus and promote Challenge on campus.
